Amber Apartment

A compact Singapore home shaped by heritage, ritual and hospitality

Amber Apartment is a private residence by INMU Studio, designed for a homeowner who wanted an apartment that could hold both retreat and company — a place that feels calm when alone, and equally natural when friends are over.

Rather than treating the apartment as a neutral backdrop, INMU Studio developed an interior drawn from the owner’s habits, collections and Peranakan heritage. Timber, colour, pattern and display are not used as styling devices, but as a way to give the apartment a more specific and personal identity.

Warm wood cabinetry moves through the living, dining, kitchen and bedroom, giving the home a continuous grain and visual depth. Against this, the studio introduced a deep saturated green wall, orange glazed kitchen tiles and softly lit display shelving. The result is intimate and collected, with a slight eccentricity that feels closer to a lived-in home than a staged interior.

The owner’s collections are central to the design. Books, board games, audio equipment, artworks, drinks and small objects are not hidden behind closed storage. They are given room within the architecture, turning shelves, niches and cabinets into part of the home’s character. The apartment becomes less about display for display’s sake, and more about the quiet accumulation of things that reveal the person who lives there.

The most personal gestures appear at the threshold and in the bathroom. At the foyer, Peranakan tiles are layered into a tile-and-glass door frame that forms part of the sliding timber partition. The detail speaks to the owner’s heritage while also resolving a spatial issue: when the partition is closed, the glass allows borrowed light into the entry, preventing the foyer from becoming dark or cut off from the rest of the home.

In the common bathroom, a Peranakan bowl is installed as the basin. It is a small but deliberate move, placing heritage within an everyday act rather than treating it as decoration. Together, the foyer frame and basin give the apartment a cultural thread that is personal, functional and quietly present.

The sliding timber partition allows the home to shift between openness and privacy. When open, the living, dining, kitchen and foyer areas read as one connected social space. When closed, the apartment takes on a more intimate rhythm, with glimpses of light and pattern still passing through the threshold. At the centre of this arrangement is the dining table — the social anchor of the home, used for meals, drinks, games and conversation.

Amber Apartment is a compact home with a distinct voice: layered, personal and slightly eccentric. Its interest lies not in spectacle, but in how heritage, objects and hospitality are woven into the everyday structure of the apartment.
