The Softened Line

A compact Singapore home shaped by an expanded kitchen, a curved edge and a borrowed sunset

In this compact Singapore home, INMU Studio reworked the kitchen from a fixed utility zone into the centre of daily life. The area originally intended as a study was absorbed into the kitchen, allowing it to expand beyond its prescribed boundary and take on a more generous role within the apartment.

The project is anchored by a curved counter that pushes past the original kitchen line. Its rounded form softens the edge between cooking, dining and living, replacing a rigid boundary with a more fluid point of connection. Drawers and cabinets are planned into its body, while a recessed opening allows the loose dining table to slide partially in when only two people are using the space. For everyday meals, the table tucks neatly into place to preserve circulation. When pulled out, it can seat six comfortably, or eight during larger gatherings.

The same gesture also accommodates the smallest member of the household. A circular opening creates a discreet hiding and observing spot for the owner’s kitten, allowing it to retreat, watch and remain close to the rhythms of the home. On the tiled base facing the kitchen, a dedicated eating and drinking area is integrated into the joinery. These details are playful, but also precise: the pet’s routines are considered as part of the architecture, rather than added later as loose objects.

If the curved counter gives the apartment its spatial logic, the light box gives it its atmosphere. Positioned beside the kitchen, the illuminated panel was conceived as a borrowed sunset — a warm amber glow drawn into the home and held there after dusk. When switched on, it softens the connected living, dining and kitchen area, casting everyday rituals in a more romantic light: cooking, eating, drinking, feeding the cat, or simply sitting at the table at the end of the day.

Materially, the apartment is restrained but warm. Walnut-toned cabinetry frames the kitchen, storage walls and doorways, giving the home a continuous grain and visual depth. Pale stone surfaces, muted blue tiles, rounded edges and concealed lighting temper the compactness of the plan. Nothing feels oversized, yet very little is single-purpose.

The Softened Line is not about making a small apartment appear larger through visual tricks. Its interest lies in how one carefully adjusted kitchen edge changes the way the home performs. By pushing past its original boundary, it becomes worktop, storage volume, dining dock, pet hideout, feeding station and social anchor. Around it, the apartment becomes more flexible, more intimate and more attuned to the rituals of everyday life.

A kitchen edge is softened. Space once set aside for a study is returned to daily use through a larger kitchen. A dining table docks and undocks. A cat finds its own room within the joinery. And at night, a wash of sunset turns the ordinary routines of home into something quietly beautiful.
